Our experience with the Caribbean Side started an Tortuguero, described in my last post. The second half of week six was spent there, before we moved on to Puerto Viejo de Limón!

The south Caribbean coast has its own vibe, its own flavors, and it’s an rich history. The common Costa Rican meal called “Casado” often had the option of a Caribbean sauce, made of coconut milk and spices, Sautéeing fish or chicken or such.
Beach hopping and a coffee tour were our main activities near Puerto Viejo. We especially enjoyed the fine sand texture of Playa Negra.

Aquiares Waterfall
Although getting directions was a struggle, we asked around and eventually found the right path. Fortunately, the google map had labeled the “little waterfall before the other one”, just to be clear that the bigger waterfall was still ahead! We could wade, but ran out of time to actually take a swim. Had to get back during daylight.

White water rafting near Turrialba
The Pacuare river is well known for being one of the best rafting rivers in the world! We were in the upper Pacuare, in a class 2 to 3 area, perfect for a few good rapids and nothing too harsh.
